With a vocation for business, Parauapebas's economy is based on mining. Neighboring Marabá, another municipality in the southeast of the state of Pará, the city is just over 700 kilometers from the state capital Belém.

Located in the heart of the Carajás Forest, 18 km from the municipality of Parauapebas and 28.5 km from Mineração da Vale do Rio Doce, Carajás Airport was built by the mining company in 1981, to serve its business.
