Conductor Wilson Fonseca - Santarém International Airport
Santarém International Airport – Conductor Wilson Fonseca (STM)
Located in the west of the state of Pará, Santarém has unforgettable natural beauty, attracting many visitors. Among them, the meeting of the waters of the Amazon and Tapajós rivers – which unite, but do not mix –, and Alter-do-Chão, a seaside village with its famous freshwater beaches and home to one of the largest folklore events in the region, Çairé, which receives tourists from all over the world. Without a doubt, one of the strong tourist powers of the northern state of Brazil, the municipality, known as the “Pearl of Tapajós”, has more than 100 kilometers of freshwater beaches and a rich historical heritage, with centuries-old buildings.
Ecotourism, however, is not Santarém's only vocation. Located between the capitals Belém (PA) and Manaus (AM), the two largest cities in the Amazon, the city has become a development hub in the region. The third largest city in Pará, Santarém forms a metropolitan region with the municipalities of Mojuí and Belterra.
As of November 27, 2023, Santarém International Airport – Conductor Wilson Fonseca began to be managed by Aena Brasil, after the concessionaire purchased a block of 11 Brazilian airport terminals in an auction from the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), carried out in 2022. As it already manages, since 2020, six units in the Northeast, Aena Brasil runs, in total, 17 airports in the country. The company is part of the Spanish company Aena, considered the largest airport operator in the world in terms of number of passengers.
The roots of Santarém Airport go back to its geographical location. The equipment was founded on March 31, 1977, to meet the Federal Government's objective of integrating the Amazon with other Brazilian states.
It was only almost 30 years after its inauguration, in 2006, that the airport terminal was renamed Santarém Airport – Conductor Wilson Fonseca, in honor of the renowned musician, composer and poet from Santarém, founder of the Academia Paraense de Música and member of the Academia Paraense de Letras.
After being incorporated by Infraero, in 1980, the unit underwent some works. In 1999, it gained a panoramic terrace that later housed a restaurant with a beautiful view of the aircraft yard. In 2016, to provide more comfort to passengers and users, the airport's renovation was completed, which made it possible to increase operational capacity to 1.8 million passengers per year.
Another moment in the unit's history that deserves to be highlighted occurred in 2013, when the airport received new rescue vehicles, to reinforce safety in rescue and firefighting operations.
During the next 30 years, the concession period, Aena Brasil will modernize Santarém International Airport, preparing the unit for the demands of the present and future, guaranteeing its users increasingly comfort and safety.
